A Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an x-ray that examines the uterus and fallopian tubes using a medical device called fluoroscopy and a liquid that contains iodine, known as iodinated contrast material. It is mainly done to get information about the uterine cavity (adhesions or scarring in the pelvis).

The most common reason why the HSG Test is done is to understand the reasons behind infertility/subfertility/miscarriages. It not only helps to know about blockages in the fallopian tube but also gives details about the uterine cavity.

At Embrion IVF, we offer HSG Testing with the top doctors in our city. We promise that your comfort and happiness matter to us as much as it matters to you. This test is crucial in knowing the reasons behind a woman’s infertility.

Why is a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Important?

In our Hysterosalpingogram Test Center, the HSG Test is mostly recommended for women who are experiencing fertility issues. It can help to know

  • It helps to know/detect blocked fallopian tubes. These blocked tubes do not let sperm reach the egg. Hence, fertilisation does not take place.

  • It can also show if there are uterine fibroids in your uterus, as it makes fertilised egg implantation difficult.

  • HSG Test can also identify uterine polyps, which again are a reason that acts as an obstacle in the implantation process.

  • Finally, it can detect any residual scarring if you have had pelvic surgeries or some infection in the past.

Preparing for Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Testing

Before the HSG Test, there are a few preparatory steps. Your doctor might give you a pain reliever before the test, usually done between days 7 and 10 of your menstrual cycle before ovulation. It makes sure you are not pregnant during the test). Inform our doctor if you have any pelvic infections or allergies, particularly to iodine or shellfish, as the dye used in the test contains iodine.

HSG Procedure

Our doctors will discuss everything with you about the HSG Test and answer any doubts you might have about it. Here is a step-by-step HSG process in our HSG Test Center.

  • You will have to lie on an examination table with your back on the table, your knees need to be bent, and your feet should be placed on the footrests (to ensure you are comfortable).

  • We will place a speculum in your vagina and clean your cervix with a cleansing solution.

  • Then we will then insert a catheter (thin and soft) into your uterus via your cervix.

  • In your pelvic area, a machine will be placed.

  • Contrast dye and catheter will be connected, and a tiny amount of dye through your fallopian tube will be flushed/transported to your uterine cavity.

  • Once the contrast dye is injected into your body, then X-rays are taken. After this, the speculum which was placed will now be removed from your vagina.

You might feel fatigued, have a stomachache, vomiting, fever or vaginal bleeding, but do not panic if this happens as it will only be for a short time, which is nothing to worry about.

Understanding the Results of HSG Test

Normal HSG Results - A normal uterine cavity is pear-shaped and does not have polyps septums, which is a wall that divides the cavity or fibroids. Normal HSG results show that the fallopian tubes are open, and the uterine cavity is normal in shape.

Abnormal HSG Results - Abnormal HSG Test results may indicate blocked fallopian tubes/Uterine polyps or fibroids/Septum in the uterus/Other uterine cavity abnormalities. If there are blockages, the contrast dye will not spill out of the affected fallopian tube(s).

If your HSG Test results are abnormal, doctors at Embrion will discuss with you the next steps you need to take in your fertility journey. They will also discuss the different treatment options for you and decide for you.

How Effective is HSG Testing?

Research/studies have shown that the HSG Test not only detects blockages but improves pregnancy rates, too (especially for couples whose reasons for infertility were not known earlier). The dye used in the HSG Test may clear blockages, leading to pregnancy in the next three months. This effect is not temporary; it just shows that the major reason behind a woman’s infertility was the blockage in her uterus/fallopian tube. In short, HSG offers double benefits: diagnosis/identification and treatment.
