Endometriosis is a situation where tissue similar to the uterus’s lining grows outside the uterus. It can grow in many parts of your body, for example, Fallopian tubes, Peritoneum, Bladder and Ureters, Intestines, and Rectum. When this happens, it causes pain and discomfort in your daily life. People who have endometriosis can have fertility issues (difficulty in getting pregnant). It is seen that this can start from the time a girl gets her first period and go up until she gets menopause.

At Embrion, we do our best to provide our patients with the most effective and up-to-date Endometriosis Treatment, which ensures the results are the best.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Heavy pain during periods, while urinating, and during (or after) sex is the most common symptom, but some people also experience these :

  • Depression/anxiety

  • Fatigue/tiredness

  • Heavy bleeding during periods (or between periods)

  • Trouble conceiving (getting pregnant)

  • Bloating in the body (especially the abdomen)

Causes of Endometriosis

The exact reason why endometriosis happens is not known. However, some theories explain how this might develop in someone. Here are the common theories :

1. Retrograde Menstruation

  • Normally, menstrual blood flows outside the body. But in the case of Retrograde Menstruation, this blood flows backwards into the pelvic area via the fallopian tube (and they carry endometrial cells with them).

2. Embryonic Cell Transformation

  • Sometimes, cells left over from when you were an embryo (before birth) can turn into endometrial-like tissue later in life due to hormonal changes.

3. Immune System Problems

  • If any endometrial tissue is growing inside your body and your immune system is weak (or is not working properly), it won’t be able to destroy the cells.

4. Genetic Factors

  • If someone from your close blood relations (e.g. mother/sister/daughter) has this condition, you might also have it.

Risk Factors for Endometriosis

Some factors can put you at a higher risk of developing endometriosis -

  • If someone in your family, i.e., a close blood relative, had endometriosis in the past.

  • If there are any defects in your fallopian tubes or uterus.

  • If you got your first periods early, i.e., before 11 years of age.

  • The duration and length of the menstrual cycle (shorter time between periods and days of blood flow).

Diagnosis of Endometriosis

To know if you have endometriosis or not, we will start by asking about your symptoms and where/when you feel pain. And the tests to make sure of this are :

1. Pelvic Exam

We use one/two gloved fingers to feel your pelvis areas to look for unusual or abnormal changes like cysts, irregular growth, nodules, or scars behind the uterus.

2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

As the name suggests, it uses a magnetic field (along with radio waves) to take pictures/images of organs and tissues inside your body.

3. Ultrasound

A usual/normal ultrasound cannot confirm if you have endometriosis or not. A device (called a transducer) is used to take pictures of your body (internal photos). This can either be pressed opposite to your stomach or placed inside your vagina.

Treatment Options for Endometriosis

We provide plenty of Endometriosis Treatment options to our patients, which include :

Medication-based Treatment

We may recommend or give you some medicines that reduce your pain. They also help reduce the symptoms of endometriosis and help you restore your optimal health. And if you are not planning/trying to get pregnant, in that case, we may recommend hormone therapy to you for your Endometriosis Treatment.

Hormone Therapy

Oral medicines, such as birth control pills, regulate the hormone level in your body, which reduces pain and blood flow.

When a woman goes through menopause, the estrogen production reduces in her body. GnRH Agonists and Antagonists create a temporary menopause-like state that shrinks the endometrial tissue.

Another way to shrink endometrial tissue is to use Progestins. We may use Danazol (a synthetic steroid) as it helps suppress the endometrial tissue’s growth.

Surgery

Endometriosis Treatment includes surgeries like laparoscopy and hysterectomy. In laparoscopy, surgeons make a tiny cut using a laparoscope in your abdomen to see inside your body and check for abnormal growth. Lesions, if found, are removed. If the endometriosis has become severe in your body, in that situation, it might be recommended to remove your uterus. This whole process of removing the uterus is called hysterectomy.

Fertility Treatments

Endometriosis makes it full of trouble getting pregnant. If you are also not able to conceive, we may recommend fertility treatments like IVF (in vitro fertilisation), IUI (Intrauterine insemination), or other such methods to help you.
