Infertility and IVF

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a comprehensive set of procedures intended to improve fertility or avoid genetic issues, and aid in child conception.

People choose IVF for various reasons, including infertility issues or when one couple has a pre-existing medical condition. If other fertility treatments have failed or they are past the prime of pregnancy, some people will try IVF. For same-sex couples or individuals who want to become parents on their own, IVF is an additional reproductive option. Infertility in both men and women can result from a variety of situations. Each can exhibit a wide range of signs and symptoms.

Signs of Infertility in Women:

  • Irregular menstrual cycle:The average woman's cycle lasts 28 days. However, as long as the cycle is consistent, a cycle lasting 21 to 35 days is considered normal. The cycle is so unpredictable with irregular periods that it's impossible to predict when the next one will arrive. An irregular cycle or an absence of a period can be a sign of infertility because it can indicate an ovulation problem.
  • Heavy and/or painful periods: Periods that interfere with your daily activities could be a sign of uterine fibroids or endometriosis. Endometriosis is responsible for 20 to 40% of infertility issues in women.
  • Pain during sex: Painful sex for women has become so common that many people believe it is a normal part of life. However, it could indicate an underlying condition such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Possible hormonal disorders include sudden weight gain, hair loss, constant fatigue, oedema, headaches, nipple discharge, facial hair, and severe acne. These conditions, in which the body's hormones are out of balance, make it more difficult to conceive.
  • Vaginal soreness and/or itchiness: Soreness or itching, especially when combined with discharge, may indicate a vaginal infection. Infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and mycoplasma can eventually lead to infertility if left untreated.

Signs of Male Infertility:

The inability of a man to conceive a child is the most obvious sign of male infertility. The problem has no other obvious signs or symptoms. In some cases, problems such as an inherited disorder, hormonal imbalance, dilated veins around the testicle, or a condition that prevents sperm passage cause signs and symptoms.

If you are experiencing any of the following signs and symptoms, you should seek treatment for male infertility.

  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Testicle pain or swelling
  • Problems maintaining an erection.
  • Issues with ejaculation
  • Abnormal breast growth
  • Decreased body or facial hair
  • Lower than an average sperm count
